What is a food bank? A food bank is a non-profit organization distributing food stuffs donated by farmers and food processing companies as well as individual food donations. The food banks act as the wholesale food distributor in the environment to feed the hungry Americans
What type of food do the food banks collect? They collect and distribute canned goods, boxed dry groceries, fresh produce, frozen foods, bakery products, and some personal hygiene or household products
What is a food kitchen? This is a place for people that are homeless and have no food to eat to receive a fresh hot meal. Of course these places are more visited during cold winter months. The meals are prepared by volunteers in large quantities to feed as many as needed on a given day or meal time.
What does the food bank do with the donated food? With the help of state and federal organizations they will distribute the food to members of the feeding America program. These food organizations are called food pantries. A food pantry is like the retail level for this food program. They will distribute the food directly to hungry people in our nation. The United States Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.) is the administrator of the food bank program

Why do we need food banks? What has created such a Huge Demand for Food Banks?
Unemployment has exploded! From December 2000 till December 2009 unemployment has increase by 210%. With this said, poverty has increased by 42% from 2000 to 2007.
With more people moving to the suburbs the hunger indicators have increased. Between the years 2000 and 2007 the suburban population increased by 15.3 %.
From 2006 till today, 65% more people are receiving emergency food relief

There are many organizations throughout the United States that are willing to help feed the unfortunate who don’t have food or a home to live in. If you or someone you know would also like to help look below to see how easy it is to donate food. Or maybe you would like to donate money. You can also donate your time and services at most of the locations. What a great rewarding felling to look into the eyes of a grateful person that is getting a nice hot meal that he can’t afford to buy for himself.
Please keep in mind that I am not recommending any certain organization that you should donate to. I’m simply showing some examples of places to look at and maybe donate to. There are hundreds of other organizations in the United States
